Christopher Gates will host presentations on a secure medical device development lifecycle and threat modeling for manufacturers
HOUSTON – April 4, 2022 – Velentium, a professional engineering firm that specializes in the design and manufacturing of therapeutic and diagnostic active medical devices, confirmed today that Director of Product Security, Christopher Gates, will be hosting two presentations at MD&M West held in Anaheim, CA from April 12-14.
“It is always rewarding to speak at well-regarded industry events such as MD&M West and connect with great minds in the med-tech arena,” said Gates. “MD&M West brings together MedTech engineers, business leaders, disruptive companies, and innovative thinkers looking to create powerful solutions and life-changing medical devices. As cybersecurity incidents, regulation, and resources continue to accelerate alongside healthcare innovation, medical device cybersecurity has become a top priority across the industry, and educational dialogues regarding the adoption of secure development lifecycles and threat modeling for manufacturers are crucial for the well-being of all parties involved.”
Why & How to Adopt a Secure Development Lifecycle
Gates’ first presentation on day one of the conference will take attendees through the activities, artifacts, and management of cybersecurity during a medical device development lifecycle. Cybersecurity starts the first day of development and does not end until the device reaches its end of support, many years later. Gates will detail how to implement these activities in the least invasive manner possible, resulting in a secure medical device, a manageable process, faster regulatory approval, and improved future maintenance cycles. This presentation will be held in the Expo Hall Tech Theater on April 12 from 3:30-4:15 PST.
Threat Modeling for Medical Device Manufacturers
Gates’ second presentation on day two will focus on MITRE’s conjoined efforts with the FDA to release the Playbook for Threat Modeling Medical Devices, published November 2021. This resource summarizes various approaches to threat modeling for engineers, developers, and designers with little to no background in cybersecurity. In this talk, Gates will review these approaches, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses and explain how they can be utilized by medical device developers to provide design guidance for securing their next medical device system. This will be a hands-on presentation with real-world examples that provided real value to projects, ensuring regulatory compliance and protecting manufacturers' business interests. This lunch and learn style presentation will be held on April 13 in Room 211 from 11:45-1:00pm PST.
